چکیده

THE problem of uniocular catcaract witlh good visual acuity in the other eye is an old, but by no means a solved, problem. The established views still upheld by many oplhthalmologists, that such a cataract is best left alone, is based on the observation that the optical correction of unilateral aphakia is not satisfactory, a-s diplopia and general discomfort are exl)erienced. Furthermilore, the risks of the actual operation and of post-operative comlplications, the frequent occurrence of divergence, and the possible disappointment of the patient at the final result, foster this conservative attitude. Cowan (1949) states:

Unilateral Aphakia and Contact Lenses*

The size of the retinal image in the corrected aphakic eye is some 24% larger than the image before removal of the crystalline Len's. This large differential makes binocular vision impossible in individuals with unilateral aphakia corrected by spectacle lenses. A similar calculation, but with a contact lens correction, reduces this figure to about 8% (Dawson, 1962) . Theoretically, intraocular ...

Practice patterns in pediatric cataract management: Time for real world data

Pediatric cataracts are responsible for more than 1 million childhood blindness in Asia. In developing countries like India, 7.4%–15.3% of childhood blindness is due to cataract.[1] The socioeconomic status of a large proportion of children with cataracts in India precludes reliable rehabilitation with contact lenses for aphakia. It is noteworthy that the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study (IATS)[2...

This paper continues the assessment of the long-term merits and problems of intraocular acrylic lenses which was started by a consideration of the value of the Binkhorst iris clip lens in aphakia by Pearce (I972). The reduced degree of aniseikonia and the better opportunity for binocular vision when uniocular aphakia is corrected by an intraocular lens implant was emphasized by Girard, Friedman...

Cyclic esotropia in a patient with unilateral traumatic aphakia: case report.

Cyclic esotropia is a rare and poorly understood condition normally treated by correcting the deviation measured on the squinting day. Control in some patients with this condition can be gained by correcting their refractive errors, thereby improving acuity. We report on an adult patient who developed cyclic esotropia after unilateral traumatic aphakia with failed contact lens wear whose squint...

Visual function following congenital cataract surgery.

To evaluate the results of congenital cataract extraction and postoperative visual function, we retrospectively reviewed the records of 95 patients who underwent pars plana (plicata) lensectomy or aspiration surgery. Forty-nine percent of the patients with bilateral aphakia and 25% with bilateral pseudophakia had a Landolt visual acuity of 0.5 or above at the final visit. The figures were 31% a...
